The 123 acres of Nichols Arboretum or the Arb operated by the University of Michigan is a natural paradise with numerous plants, walking trails and river land. Their general collections of plants include Lebanon Cedars, Chinese Fringetree, Ginkgo, Conifers, Cupressaceae, Hackberries, Hawthorn, Larch, Legumes, Korean Quasibark, Tulips, Magnolia, Oak, Turkish Hazelnut, Ulmaceae, White Pines and many more. Their prized areas are Centennial Shrub Collection, Dow Prairie and adjacent woods, gateway garden, Heathdale, Rhododendron trail, Oak Openings and the famous Peony Garden that hosts the yearly Peony Festival. The Schoolgirls Glen through the boulder laden woods is mesmerizing. The Huron River landing is perfect for canoeing, fly-fishing and bird-watching. The “heart of the Arb” or the Main Valley is also a vast rolling hill slope, perfect to enjoy sunbathing or picnicking.
