About The Virgin Mary's House, Selcuk

Located on the slopes of the “Bulbul” mountain, this shrine has a wonderful ambience, hidden behind the greenery. The shrine was rediscovered by a German nun, Anne Catherine Emmerich. The legend says, the Virgin Mary spent her last few days on the earth in this House.

The House has that typical Roman architecture, that is, it is made of stone. However, in the 4th century, a church was built combining this house and the grave of the Virgin Mary. Inside the house, there were around four rooms; anteroom, bedroom, praying room and a room with fireplace. Today, only one room beside the altar and some part of the central portion is open for public visit. It is also an important pilgrimage for the devotees.

The Virgin Mary's House, Selcuk Reviews

  • The House of Mary is the most incredible site where proximity to God is clear and comforting. Your hole body and spirit become spiritually unified in a different dimension. Miracles occur right there and then.

  • In1961 Pope John XXIII made known that ceremonies could be performed in the House of the Virgin Mary discussions about the place were subdued and the number of visitors gradually increased. The house was declared a place of pilgrimage. In 1967 Pope Paul VI and in 1979 Pope John Paul II visited. Nov. 29, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass at the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus.

  • Very special place hidden in the mountains right by Ephesus. You can feel the peace even though it buzzes with tourists.

  • It's not overly commercialized, only c14 shops out front, which is nice. Unfortunately for me, the house itself is presented less as an artifact and place of historical significance but has instead been converted into a shrine for her followers to pray to her at. I doubt that she would have had a statue of herself on an alter in her own house. I think this would be more appropriate in the future museum of the late Kanye West. I was hoping to find more information venerating Mary's life and explaining as much as is known about her from the various sources in history. Bring lira for the WC, expect a que to get in, and you can make a wish on a wall just down the path from her place.

  • Unfortunately, the house interior doesn't look like an actual house, but rather a shrine, so you won't get a sense of how the day to day life was 2000 years ago. Nevertheless, if you came all this way to Ephesus, you'll might as well come to a place of historical significance.
