Located on the slopes of the “Bulbul” mountain, this shrine has a wonderful ambience, hidden behind the greenery. The shrine was rediscovered by a German nun, Anne Catherine Emmerich. The legend says, the Virgin Mary spent her last few days on the earth in this House.

The House has that typical Roman architecture, that is, it is made of stone. However, in the 4th century, a church was built combining this house and the grave of the Virgin Mary. Inside the house, there were around four rooms; anteroom, bedroom, praying room and a room with fireplace. Today, only one room beside the altar and some part of the central portion is open for public visit. It is also an important pilgrimage for the devotees.

  • Visited many years ago, but this is not a place to be missed while visiting Izmir & Ephesus. The energy within the shrine was astounding! Definitely make this part of your trip if you're in the area.

  • Worth a visit. The chapel is very serene. When will people stop vandalizing statues?

  • Peaceful place, the road and scenery was even beautiful. It closes at 5 o'clock, so it would be enjoyable ride back.

  • No architectural value, just a small old house with two rooms. And the entrance fee is very high. The nature around is beautiful but again not worth the entrance fee.

  • Taxi around here is over charged! 5 TL per Km, in Istanbul is about 2.5-3 TL per KM! Since they over charged me once... I decided no more taking taxi to anywhere in this area, I am sad there is no bus to go to Mary House.
