This waterfall makes it into the list of the top hundred waterfalls in Japan in terms of both beauty and historic significance. That said, the falls don't look all that special. It is the walk and the atmosphere leading up to the falls that make the trip fun. When you arrive at the parking lot, you'll find snack stores and a resting area. In front of you will be a Torii Gate. Walking through it takes you into the waterfall complex. At the beginning of this traile, you'll see a shrine area - this is the Akiu Otaki Fudoson temple. The stone pathway behind the shrine leads to the main observation deck. Now you can watch the 55 meter tall falls from up here or you can take the walking path down to the base. Also close to this area. Also linked by the forest trails is Rairaikyo Gorge, which has the smaller Shigure-taki Falls and Misuji-taki Falls.

Akiu Great Falls Reviews & Ratings
秋保大滝 is a wonderful waterfall! An easy viewing spot is available, as well as a 20 minute hike to a better spot. The way back is more difficult, so for those that can't handle stairs, steer clear of the hike. Please do not bring food with you, and watch your kids. The water here is quick moving and rocky.
Great waterfall. A bit slippery in winter. The transportation was inconvenient, but there is a rest house to keep you warm in winter. Not many visitors on the weekdays.
Very impressive. It wasn't obvious how to get to the best spot, but well worth it when we did!
It's about an hour driving from Sendai city. Please check bus schedule if you go there by public transportation. Driving should be a better option.
Good place but went on a holiday. Check bus timetables carefully as only one bus on when we went. 4th January, so meant only had 25mins there. Needed 1-2 hours for a very relaxed walk down to falls and back up plus lunch. Keep that in mind when checking buses. We took JR line to ayashi station then the bus number 87 to the falls about 18km away and 760y.
