Aoba Castle - Review
It's a little humorous that a city's main attraction is a whole lot of nothing. This is where the Aoba Castle USED to be. The poor structure, once a grand and mighty edifice built during beginning of the Edo period, was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes. Then came the Meiji Restoration and the Allied bombings of WWII, leaving naught but a husk of the former fortification. At this point, the only item of worth noticing here is the statue of feudal lord Date Masamune on horseback. There is a museum nearby on the history of the castle. Also nearby is a shrine with a small museum on military history. But before you move on, make sure to take in the view. The castle was built on a plateau atop a high hill, and the panorama of Sendai you get from here is unbeatable. You can climb up the hill if you wish, for some gruelling exercise. The view at night is quite nice too.

Aoba Castle, Sendai-shi Reviews
The place is nice and it's very useful to know more about Masamune. Also, you can get great views of Sendai. But the name and the photos in Google Maps are misleading. There is no castle at all, just the grounds of it, so it is very frustrating to get there and see nothing more than indications of where the rooms of the castle used to be.
Nice view of Sendai city and an array of souvenirs you can purchase. The parking is 200yen for half an hour. You can also try a bean flavored shake and cow tongue, both which are specialties in Sendai.
nice view for sendai city but tad hard to reach by subway alone. what ever you do, never try to walk from tohoku university aobayama campus (as navigated from google map) as the downhill path is rather desolate and has no sidewalk
Nice place on the ruins of the castle and walls. Museum (the one with entry fee) is very small and expensive tho. Good food.
Interesting attraction. I hope you like hiking as it is on a steep hill. Amazing views if it is a clear day. There are some guides there who are dressed up which is good fun. The museum was closed on the day we visited.
