About Aoba Castle, Sendai-shi
It's a little humorous that a city's main attraction is a whole lot of nothing. This is where the Aoba Castle USED to be. The poor structure, once a grand and mighty edifice built during beginning of the Edo period, was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes. Then came the Meiji Restoration and the Allied bombings of WWII, leaving naught but a husk of the former fortification. At this point, the only item of worth noticing here is the statue of feudal lord Date Masamune on horseback. There is a museum nearby on the history of the castle. Also nearby is a shrine with a small museum on military history. But before you move on, make sure to take in the view. The castle was built on a plateau atop a high hill, and the panorama of Sendai you get from here is unbeatable. You can climb up the hill if you wish, for some gruelling exercise. The view at night is quite nice too.

Aoba Castle, Sendai-shi Reviews
Interesting attraction. I hope you like hiking as it is on a steep hill. Amazing views if it is a clear day. There are some guides there who are dressed up which is good fun. The museum was closed on the day we visited.
Very cool! The grounds are clean and well tended. It was great to experience this culture in a setting that allows you to imagine the original residents. Also the shrine atop the hill is still in use by the city. There was a demonstration by actors in period costumes that was entertaining as well.
Only the castle foundation is left. Do not try to attempt the climb up. "Loople Bus" is available, but be sure to check the timetables. Last bus down is always packed.
Lovely view to Sendai City and the surrounding. There are free guide provided by volunteer ( I guess? ), Some of them even dressed like samurai, to give you history feeling. You may want to take looper bus instead of walk your way up; you can use one day pass on those looper bus.
The Sendai castle ruins is Nice area to walk around. From the international center it probably take about 15 minutes to walk to the top of this area. Nice view!
