It's a little humorous that a city's main attraction is a whole lot of nothing. This is where the Aoba Castle USED to be. The poor structure, once a grand and mighty edifice built during beginning of the Edo period, was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes. Then came the Meiji Restoration and the Allied bombings of WWII, leaving naught but a husk of the former fortification. At this point, the only item of worth noticing here is the statue of feudal lord Date Masamune on horseback. There is a museum nearby on the history of the castle. Also nearby is a shrine with a small museum on military history. But before you move on, make sure to take in the view. The castle was built on a plateau atop a high hill, and the panorama of Sendai you get from here is unbeatable. You can climb up the hill if you wish, for some gruelling exercise. The view at night is quite nice too.

Aoba Castle Reviews & Ratings
Good views of Sendai. Easy 50 minute (approx) walk from Sendai or from International Centre subway station. Part of the walk is uphill that some will find strenuous. There is a Sendai Loople bus service that stops at the castle. The Castle ruins are really just the footprint of the castle. There are remains of castle wall gates, with information boards (in Japanese and English), that you pass walking to the castle location. There are food venues at the summit - didn't try them. Summit can be crisp and windy in winter (very chilly, with snow settled in various places in shadow).
Was very nice sits atop MT Aoba, great view of the city. We went on a clear day so we could see the snow capped mountains. We took the Sendai Loople Bus to get there.
Sendai Castle, or more accurately the remains, was amazing. The building itself doesn't exist anymore, but it was built in an excellent location from which you can see the entire city. You can even see Daikannon in the distance. We went on a relatively warm day, but even then there was still snow on the ground so I imagine it would be pretty chilly in winter and on cold days, due to the altitude and being so exposed. You really can see everything. The grounds also have a few shrines, and if you explore a bit further you can find some restaurants and souvenir places. Of particular note is the Zunda Shake; a soybean milkshake. You cannot leave this place without trying it, you will kick yourself. The Sendai Loople bus tour/ride stops here, so it's relatively easy to get to, just catch the bus from Sendai Station.
Day trip from Tokyo using JR passes, remains of castle, great views, some gift shops, a shrine and some role playing ninjas and shogun warriors. The tourist bus goes from the station.
Not a castle not even ruins of it. Should be advertised as the sight of the former castle that belonged to etc. Nice views of the city.
