About Jogyesa, Seoul

Jogyesa is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, becoming so in 1936. It thus plays a leading role in the current state of Seon Buddhism in South Korea. The temple was first established in 1395, at the dawn of the Joseon Dynasty; the modern temple was founded in 1910 and initially called "Hwanggaksa." The name was changed to "Taegosa" during the period of Japanese rule, and then to the present name in 1954. Jogyesa is located in Gyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu, in downtown Seoul. Natural monument No. 9, an ancient white pine tree, is located within the temple grounds. Jogyesa Temple is located in one of the most popular cultural streets in Seoul, Insa-dong. • Very great temple located in the city and next to Insadong market. Even though it's not a big temple, but it's decoratedwith flowers beautifully especially in the period I visited (early November 2017).

  • ✓ Very well-organized temple with full of seasonal events like outdoor flower-gardening exhibitions and so on. ✓ Situated at the very center of Seoul(Subway Line 3 Anguk) ✓ Headquarter of Korean temples

  • We were staying nearby and visited everyday. The store within this square has offerings to give to the temple and extremely beautiful beaded bracelets that you can sometimes catch on sale! Great place for a morning walk. If you can get up at 5 and 6 am (not hard with the jet lag) to head over- you can hear the chants and look in on the prayer.

  • Beautiful Buddhist Temple in Seoul. Elegant and graceful but unobtrusive. It was quite busy when we were there with both tourists and worshippers but there was no sense of being rushed or hustled for anything. Very calm and peaceful experience.

  • Ancient Buddhist temple in Seoul. It is a historically significant temple. Has beautiful lantern celebration on Buddha's birthday. has a Buddhist museum next to it. Also organizes Buddhist retreats, non Koreans can also take part.
