Namdaemun Market, Seoul Reviews
I've been living in the area just for 45 days and it's crazy beautiful. Some people may find it messy and noisy but it was amazing to me as it helped me not to feel lonely in the huge Seoul. It's opened until late and from early morning you can go and find fresh fruit. The basement is full of nuts, dresses, spices and music shops, people are welcoming and easy to talk to even if you're not fluent in Korean. Plus, there is a lady selling veggies and fruit right after exit4 of the tube who has some of the best Asian Pears in town.
Definitely the place to shop and eat all the local snacks. We came early at 10 am and were able to go the shops with ease, not to mention eating. Getting a map of the place from the information booth is very important as it helps you to navigate the entire Namdaemun. The information booth is located in the middle of the Main Street. Goggle doesn’t have the names of the shop in detail.
Expect to squeeze your way through people. It is very easy to get lost here so if you are not coming alone, always know where your partner(s) is. Also, don't wander too far without knowing the place because lots of shops look similar and you will get lost. Occasionally you might find a wall with a map printed on it, but I wouldn't rely on those. Be careful. Other than too many people and getting lost, there is a lot of good street food. This can be a good place to shop because they have almost everything.
Are you hungry? There's a variety of things to eat! Do you prefer to shop? Don't worry, Namdaemun's got you covered. Do you just want to see new and exciting things? Well, what are you waiting for - go to Namdaemun! Even if you don't want to spend any money, I highly recommend still going to experience the atmosphere of a traditional market. There are people everywhere, shop owners are shouting about the items they are selling to those who might be interested, and deliverymen are swerving in and out of the crowd.
Going here was part of my childhood back in the 80s. Being back here in my late 30s with my kids in tow brought back some very fond memories. It is high traffic and heavy foot traffic area. Kids will love visiting the area. Lots of shopping opportunities and food to eat. This is one of must areas in Seoul area. Don't leave Seoul without seeing NDM.
