Dedicated to the 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield, the James A. Garfield Monument was built in 1890. The monument is built in Gothic, Romanesque style of architecture and makes for a spectacular sight to behold. The monument holds the casket of the late president along with that of Lucretia Garfield and the ashes of their daughter and son-in-law. The monument has reliefs that depict scenes from Garfield’s life. It also has a splendid statue of him made of Carrara marble standing 12 foot tall. The insides are characterized by stained glass windows, mosaics, panels showcasing War and Peace, and deep red granite columns. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, one must visit this monument while in Cleveland.
