About Alameda De Hercules, Seville
This large garden square is more of a rectangle than a square. See the white poplar trees? They are called ‘alamos’ in Spanish, hence the name. This is the oldest public garden on the continent. Historic structures around the square include the Casa de las Sirenas, the chapel of Nuestra Senora del Carmen y Cruz del Rodeo and the birthplace of Gustavo Adolfo Becquer. It’s pretty looks today are a far cry from the swamp this area used to be back in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the Industrial Age, it was a meeting place for the local rich. In the 20th century, it deteriorated into a den of prostitution and drug running. Now prettified again with trees, benches, fountains and reduced traffic, it’s a major nightspot, with bars, pubs, discos and tea-rooms.
