About Plaza Del Triunfo, Seville

Flanked as it is on all sides by Seville’s heavyweight historical buildings (General Archive of the Indies, Alcazar Palace, Seville Cathedral), the square is almost famous just for being famous. The plaza is so named because of a historical event. The 1755 Lisbon Earthquake shook even Seville, and though there were people in Mass inside the cathedral at that time they were able to make it outside and finish the Mass without a single injury. In commemoration of this the El Triunfo monument was erected here, where an annual thanksgiving Mass is held.. There is another monument in the square, the Monument to the Immaculate Conception, a 1918 creation carved with the figures of Bartolome Esteban Murillo, Miguel Cid, Martinez Montanes and Juan de Pineda.

  • The center of town! Flanked by the Cathedral and Alcazar. Crowded, but public toilets in the tourist building, not office but to the left in the next entryway under the flags

  • Nice little spot to watch the world go by

  • This is one of the most beautiful plazas in Seville. It's not grand or large but the buildings surrounding it are fantastic and there is always someone playing music.

  • Popular meeting place for school groups

  • A great little plaza where people sit on the steps of the statue. When I was there everyone was just relaxing and a man was sitting by the wall playing flamenco. The ambience was too good.
