The Longhua Temple can be considered to be the main tourist attraction in the Longhua Tourist City. This temple is a shining example of the style of architecture that rose to prominence under the Long Dynasty and the construction of the temple reflects the sensibilities of the Buddhist Chan sect.

Being one of the largest temples in the city, the Longhua temple is also one of the largest and best preserved Buddhist temples in the Shanghai. The construction of the temple was completed in 242 AD but due to the result of numerous wars, the temple had to be reconstructed in 977 AD. A full scale modern restoration of the temple complex was carried out in 1954.

Other than a spiritual site, the grounds of the temple have also been utilized for internment of criminals and public executions. The Martyr’s Cemetery located in the premises is a testimony to the mass killings of communists by Kuomingtan in 1927.
