The name Lupu is a juxtaposition of the names of two of the areas which the bridge connects, the Luwan and Pudong Districts. The Lupu Bridge holds records for being the second longest steel arch bridge in the world.
The bridge was completed in 2002 after two years of construction and was primarily designed to lessen the congestion of traffic and to service the area around the Huangpu River. The bridge has however met with its fair share of criticism. Locals have criticized the bridge for being wasteful and extravagant. Many people consider the bridge to be nothing more than a showpiece and a vanity project because numerous less expensive designs were rejected in favour of this design.
The bridge today is a popular tourist destination. People can ride a high speed elevator at the mouth of the bridge and ascend to the top of the arch after climbing a three hundred and sixty seven step staircase.
Owning the title of the second largest steel bridge in the world, Lupu Bridge has established itself among the most admirable attractions in China.
