Contrary to popular belief, there was and is a significant Christian influence in China. This influence manifests itself in Shanghai in the form of the St. Ignatius Cathedral. Located in Puxi Road, in Xujiahui in the Xuhui District, this church is famed for attracting over two thousand worshippers on every Sunday.
Built by French Jesuit monk and missionaries under the guidance of architect William Doyle, the church was completed sometime between 1905 and 1910. The church had faced severe vandalism problems in the late 1960s and remained as a grain silo for a long period of time.
It was later reopened again in the early stages of the 1980s. Today it is a common tourist spot and people can spend their Sunday afternoon relaxing in the locality.
