The heart of Sheffield beats green, not red, with numerous gardens filled with pulsating plant life occupying the heart of the city. As you explore the city, you’ll have the option of visiting numerous fascinating places including the largest greenhouse in the Europe, the Sheffield Winter Garden. Surround yourself with green in this stupendous structure as over 2000 plants from all over the world, which co-exist harmoniously. If the heat is bothering you, you can grab some shade underneath these trees and relish the peace and quiet that will surround you in this spacious structure. You can also choose from a variety of shops to hunt for souvenirs.
The Gardens opened its doors in 2003 and was inaugurated by the Queen. It was built to change its inner climate to suit the needs of its plants, regardless of the climate outside. Special frost protection technology and walls made out of a silvery, super durable timber have created a natural environment for the survival of all the diverse plant species inside. A system of fans and vents coordinate in order to keep the plants cool during summer and warm during winter and the plants are watered by hose. The building itself is 70 meters long and 22 meters high, large enough to fit 5,000 normal greenhouses! This Garden has created a giant green lung in the heart of urban Sheffield.
What makes the Winter Garden so special is the huge variety of plants it houses, making it a shining example of efforts to conserve plants. Visiting the garden should be quite informational and if you take the time to study each resident, you’ll be fascinated by the different kinds of plant life in the world. The Garden has been recognized by numerous environmental, botanical and architectural institutions, winnings awards like the Pro Yorkshire Award for Design and Innovation, the Green Flag and was commended by the British Guild of Travel Writers.
Walk through rows of pretty, strong plants of more than 150 species, hailing from Central American, China and Madagascar. The greenhouse, with its temperature controlled weather, is like a different world for these plants, without which they would perish. You’ll notice that each variety of plant is kept together in groups of similar moisture requirement, with the Southern end of the garden keeping those who require more sun. Each plant is labeled so that you can get familiar with them, such as the tall Eucalyptus trees and Norfolk Island Pines that will surround you.
There are also regular attractions you might be lucky enough to catch, such as photo exhibitions, pop up shops filled with all kinds of goods and the Bessemer Gallery. You can grab a coffee from the upper level and contemplate down below, secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city. You can roam around the exterior, with its interesting architecture comprising shiny steel spheres. Situated next to the Millennium Gallery and the Peace Garden, this completes the trio of attractions that attract all and sundry to this part of Sheffield.
