Tropical Butterfly House - Review

Prepare to be transported into a Disney Dream World, where trilling Sparrows perch upon your palms and Meerkats peek at you while munching on their meal. Fresh, green leaves will surround you and your loved ones as you wander through this soothing, organic environment. This is also a fabulous place to learn about animals, while admiring them at the same time. Interactive, intriguing and inspiring, the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre in Sheffield will foster joy in the hearts of everyone –young and old.

The Tropical Butterfly House is a sultry enclosure, where butterflies of different sizes and colours flit and flutter through the air. Accompanying these flickering fairies are feisty birds and Egyptian fruit bats, singing and gliding through the air. As wings stretch out up above you, you’ll find an incredible array of life just around your ankles! Cute Iguanas and sneaky Chameleons will slyly watch you from behind green leaves and down below, all kinds of bugs, including glow in the dark Scorpions, go on with their daily business. The Meerkat Mansion is the abode of a family of adorable, fuzzy meerkats. What initially started out as 3 meerkats has now grown to a family of 14 all headed by Mrs. Meerkat.

Come and meet Simples, Fizzy, Buttons, Crunchie, Twix and the whole large eyed, button nosed gang! The Small Animal House is sure to be a huge hit with little kids as it’s home to the Centre’s tiniest members, namely the guinea pigs, rabbits, chicks and chipmunks. Lemur Heights, the newest exhibit, is a walk-through Lemur enclosure where these extraverted little guys roam freely.

There are also more interactive areas, where you can feed the animals and watch some of them perform incredible tricks. You can tip toe around the ducks and geese in the Farm Barn and offer them some munchies in return for their friendship. Gloriously large Giant Continental Rabbits await you, as does Corrie the Shetland Pony! Animal food is purchasable in the premises. The most spectacular exhibit, titled Birds of Prey, feature large Owls, Falcons, Hawks, Kites, Vultures and more! This is where you’ll meet Jet, Sonic and Rogue, Black Kite siblings determined to show off their aerial acrobatics, as are the McCawsAlfie, Kato, Che, Esteban.

The real star of the program is Odin, a raven who solves puzzles, paints and plays fetch with aplomb. Another treat is the daily Parrot Display; colourful and remarkably talented birds from Australia, South America and Africa who spend their hours playing basketball, skateboarding and chatting up whoever’s closest!

After playing with and learning about all these critters, you can finally relax at Butterfly Cafe. Kids can tumble around in the Realm of Camelot adventure playground or channelize their energy creatively at the indoor Activity and Craft Center. This beautiful place is also a great site for picnics and birthday parties, both of which they make special arrangements for.

Tropical Butterfly House, Sheffield Reviews

  • What a gem of a place!! A little hard to find at first as you think you are going the wrong way. Beautifully set out. Its so clean and all the animals look very well looked after. There is lots to keep the little ones busy and you could easily spend all day here. The food in the cafe is well priced with plenty of options for hot or cold food. Lovely home made hot food. Well worth a visit you won't be dissapointed.

  • This place never fails to amaze me. We have been 4 times as a nursery setting in the past 3 years and have another two visits planned here this week. So much to see and do, can easily spend a full day here. Staff are very attentive and helped to make our time here enjoyable and easy, we were allocated a room for our lunchtime but the perfect weather meant we could also eat outside on one of the many picnic tables dotted around the venue. Highlights were definitely the, meet rex the dinosaur and the amazing bird show which had children in awe. Plenty of fun facts told as they put on an amazing display of birds in flight, skunks, rats, and more than I can remember. Can't wait to go back!! Definitely worth a visit. Oh and the food in the cafe was top!

  • Took my daughter for a day out in the school holidays. We came via bus as we live fairly locally and I was pleased to be dropped practically at the main gate. 1 adult and 1 child came to just less than £25 entry which felt expensive given the fact that park isn't overly large. We were given a park map and as we entered got to watch the last half of the parot demonstration, which was fantastic. I love the fact the macaws are rescues from the pet trade. We ate which again was expensive so I'd advice a picnic £17 for a kids sandwich box meal, and lasagna chips and a bottle of water. Overall animals seemed well kept and the place is clean and well staffed. Would go again.p

  • This is a fabulous day out if you have kids, but I used to love going to the butterfly house even before being a parent. We’ve had an annual pass for this place and will be renewing it as we get so much use of it - you can easily spend a whole day here if you see all the animals, go to the talks and use the play areas too; but we quite often just go for a few hours, especially later in the day when it starts to get quiet. There are lots of events but our favourites are the tropical house, the dinosaur trail, and the digger/sandpit area - all of which are permanent features. The main restaurant does a range of reasonably priced breakfasts, hot meals, sandwiches and drinks, and there are lunch boxes for the kids; there’s picnic areas too if you want to keep the costs down.

  • A great day out. Animal interaction, great walks with surprises, seaside water fun and activity areas which all open up language and imagination skills and all round family fun. Only downside was the tractor ride which lasted about 5 mins and took you round a car park /disused area... Not a good look for an otherwise great place.
