Dapeng Fortress, about 55km east of the city centre; is a small but well preserved ancient town which was built in the 1394, to protect the area from pirates. It later developed into a town during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1571, it sustained a siege of over forty days by Japanese pirates equipped with scaling ladders. The fortress was the site of one of the key battles in the country’s infamous opium wars. Lining both sides of the narrow stone streets are residential buildings that feature black tiles and exquisite carvings on the window panels and eaves, completing the unique rural scenery. It is the perfect getaway from the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city.
