Xin'an (Nantou) Ancient City is the original county town that used to surround Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Majority of the old town has been demolished and replaced by eight storey residential buildings in the ‘Urban village’ style. Even after the wave of urbanization the town has managed to preserve the flavor of a Cantonese town throughout the ages with its vibrant street life. The Ming dynasty wall and the gate stand proud in a magnificently preserved condition, as does the Guan Yu temple just outside the gates. You can visit the eighteenth century ‘Flower Street’ or the street of brothels, a narrow alley with an 18th century official stele denouncing the evils of prostitution. Other historical buildings at the site are the Naval and Civil headquarters, a silver shop and an opium den. Highlights and must sees include:
