Tashilunpo Monastery Reviews & Ratings
One of the largest monasteries in Tibet which holds some couple of hundred monks. We visited this site during a morning and were lucky enough to witness a prayer. It matches other Tibetan monasteries when it comes to ornaments but the size is something different. All seemed much bigger. Do make sure to walk the Kora around it for an even better view from above.
This monastery has the world largest indoor Maitreya Buddha statue in the world, with more than 600 years of history. The Maitreya Buddha is awe-inspiring and majestic, decked with jewels and gold skin. Unfortunately, you cannot take photos. Other open areas are permitted to take photos. It is definitely worth a visit, but be warned, there are no good hotels nearby. At most 2 stars? The region here is frequently hit by sandy winds, do remember to wear face masks and wear sunglass to protect your eyes.
The monastery is supposed to be residence of Panchen Lama (but he stays in Beijing) and it is a huge complex. For fotos inside you need to pay 300 yuan. Really recommended is the Kora around it.
This Monastery was built by 5 the Dalailama in the year 1447. It was given to Penchlama the Guru of 11 the Dalailama. They conduct an assembly of all the Buddhist Monks once a year in the month of August and debate and celebrations takes place at that time.
This monastery is overlooked in some of the tours offered to Tibet / Lhasa, don't make this mistake. It was one of the highlights of our trip and encapsulates everything that is beautiful, unique and thought provoking about Tibet and its people.
