About Elephant Fall, Shillong

Known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew by the local Khasi people, Elephant Falls are perhaps the most popular tourist destination in Shillong. If you are on a sight-seeing spree of the city, make sure this place is right at the top of your itinerary. The first thing that you will witness after reaching the spot is the foaming white water, gurgling down the stony steps. This crystal clear water is in contrast with the greenery on the sides of the waterfall, adding to the beauty of the place. Renamed as Elephant Falls by the British, who found it difficult to pronounce the local name, the waterfall is believed to have gotten its name from a huge elephant-shaped rock near it. Though the rock was destroyed in an earthquake, the name remained. Make the best use of this waterfall and shed your inhibitions to take a dip in cold, clear water.

Elephant Fall, Shillong Reviews

  • A unique 3 tier waterfall. This is situated in the Shillong Cherrapunjee main road. Well maintained. One has to go down the stairs to watch each level of the waterfall. Good number of tourists. There is a small entry fee. Parking is available. There are petty shops around. Can get tea coffee etc. There is a big garden too. One has to climb up after reaching the last layer at the base. Aged people may find it difficult as it is very steep climb up. Good place for photography. I think during monsoon the fall will be wonderful sight.

  • Beautiful Elegant Fantastic Waterfall BUT you have to go bit down using stairs only. Their something different feels come out. Not for handicapped people's. Tickets are not costly and parking is free with proper packing area. Food is available and special photography with dressing too .

  • The fall is magnificent. The breathe-taking view of this amazing water fall fishing doen with tones of water every moment will surely impress you. Nature's beautiful creation. India in its true natural form is unequaled....

  • A decent tourist attraction that is about 200 steps down & can be seen from three different points during the descent at different heights. There was a rock formation that looked like an elephant but it is sadly no more due to an earthquake a few 100 years ago. This is a clean site, good for family travels & offers many selfie/photo opportunities.

  • The three stages of the falls connected by scenic stairs offer a pleasant gentle 10 minute walk. Keen eyes might spot birds especially around the middle falls. The area is kept clean by staff and tourists and it a good place for visit with friends and family.
