Known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew by the local Khasi people, Elephant Falls are perhaps the most popular tourist destination in Shillong. If you are on a sight-seeing spree of the city, make sure this place is right at the top of your itinerary. The first thing that you will witness after reaching the spot is the foaming white water, gurgling down the stony steps. This crystal clear water is in contrast with the greenery on the sides of the waterfall, adding to the beauty of the place. Renamed as Elephant Falls by the British, who found it difficult to pronounce the local name, the waterfall is believed to have gotten its name from a huge elephant-shaped rock near it. Though the rock was destroyed in an earthquake, the name remained. Make the best use of this waterfall and shed your inhibitions to take a dip in cold, clear water.

  • Avoid going in the dangerous zones of waterfall.

  • You can go by bus or taxi.

  • Upp-town restaurant

  • Actually when discovered by the Britishers there was a rock on the left bank of the falls which resembled an Elephant and so it get it's name..However the rock was destroyed in an earthquake in 1897 or so... It's a three step falls...The real beauty is when you get down to the bottom most... You have to get down almost 100 stairs to get to the bottom of the third fall....However there are sitting places and you can rest your tired legs here

  • We reached the place and bought tickets. There are 3 water falls. The bottom most one is most beautiful. Remember that you have to climb back 180 steps after seeing 3 Rd fall. Not advisable for elders to go down till 3rd fall.
