If you are in Shillong you cannot and should not miss out on the Ward's Lake. Located in the heart of the city, this horse-shoe shaped lake is a popular spot to take a lazy walk or admire the green lawn dotted with multi-colored flowers. Shillong travel guide mentions Ward’s lake as the most visited destination and we know why!
Named after Sir William Ward, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, who initiated the plan for the construction of this lake, which was later constructed by Colonel Hopkins in the year 1894, this lake is nature at its very best. It is also said that the area around this place was made by a Khasi prisoner, who requested to let him work to bring a change to his monotonous daily routine. Thus, his role in beautifying the place is something which is remembered even today.
There is also a Botanical Garden near the lake which has various orchids, apart from the several other varieties of flora that adorn it. The bridge in the midst of the lake is the perfect place to enjoy a view of the whole lake, and maybe even feed the fish!

Wards Lake, Shillong Reviews - Write a Review
The small yet picturesque lake in the heart of Shilling is a worth visiting place in Shillong. Paved pathway around the lake is interesting for walkers. Boating is real fun. There is a small trataurant beside the lake which serves both veg and non-veg north Indian, south Indian as well as Chinese and Tibetan food. We spent two hours in Ward's lake with much fun and frolic.
One of the most popular attractions of Shillong, Ward’s lake is a must-visit place when in this pristine north-eastern city. Also known as Pollock’s Lake, this artificial water body is encircled by an extensive lush garden and lies in the middle of the city. Take a walk around this horse-shoe shaped lake on the cobble-stone path or simply admire the colorful floral beds in the garden. It is equally popular amidst locals, family vacationers and honeymooning couples, as a picnic spot. It is in the heart of the city ... near Police bazar ..
It's nothing overwhelming but a good place for visit. Calm, serene lake and surroundings. Cherry trees blossoming everywhere (in Nov). Good number of exotic and vibrantly colored flowers. Huge, ancient, well-maintained trees. The lake is situated right in the middle of city so getting here is no big deal. Entry fee of INR 20 for Indians; cameras separate.

A man made lake with good boating options to exercise. Well maintained landscape inspite of heavy subscription.
