The majestic ruins of Abbey of San Galgano were found in the valley of the river Merse. It was built by the Cistercian monks and was dedicated to St. Galganus. This 13th century abbey was built in the gothic style and was once a wealthy, thriving church that was later left to ruins until recent restorations. The abbey declined in the 16th century due to a long period of corruption. As of now, an empty shell remains of what was once a beautiful church.

Went for a friend’s wedding here. Honestly the most beautiful venue for one, ever! Also, little known fact.. the field next to the abbey is where they shot quite a few scenes from Gladiator. Also don’t miss the lovely restaurant and hotel next to it. Food was amazing and it’s completely family run.
Went here in October 2017. An amazing site and great venue for the wedding we visited. Quite stuck out in the middle of nowhere but totally worth the trip!
Romantic place, historic setting. Nearby restaurant serves excellent food. Very reasonable prices
Really cool place, nice to visit. A lot of people have wedding here, but you can only have a ceremony. Would be amazing if they would allow the whole wedding reception there as well.
The Legend of Excalibur is true in Galgano! Visiting the Abbey is worth it. There's so much history and the story of conversion and of faith. You've got to be there and see for yourself this massive roofless church and the still embedded sword of St. Galgano. Don't miss the arms/bones of the thief insode the circular church on top of the hill. He tried to steal the sword and was attacked by the wolves who are friends and guardians of the saint.
