The majestic ruins of Abbey of San Galgano were found in the valley of the river Merse. It was built by the Cistercian monks and was dedicated to St. Galganus. This 13th century abbey was built in the gothic style and was once a wealthy, thriving church that was later left to ruins until recent restorations. The abbey declined in the 16th century due to a long period of corruption. As of now, an empty shell remains of what was once a beautiful church.

Abbazia Di San Galgano, Siena Reviews - Write a Review

  • I was married at this precious place in June 2017. It is so magical and will always hold a very special memory for us.

  • Lovely abbey ruin up in the hills with a coffee shop and restaurant. Apparently the abbey was owned by a gambler who had to sell the roof and stained glass windows, hence why it's now a ruin.

  • Very beautiful old abbey. You have to pay for entering the building but its well worth it. Clean, well preserved and not overrun.

  • one of the most fascinating Italian churches. You feel the energy of other times

  • It was nice to visit this place, its very small and not that exoensive (3.5Eur/Person). If you walk up the hill you can visit the church with the sword in the stone. Entry there is Free.
