About Moors Castle, Sintra

Moors’ Castle or Castelo dos Mouros (as it is locally known) is a medieval castle located on top of a hill. It was constructed in the middle of the 9th century when Portugal and Spain were under Islamic rule. In early 12th century it was seized by Afonso Henriques and his Christian army. Due to its location, it served as an important strategic point of defence for the region. A chapel was constructed as part of the Castle which served as the Parish for the town of Sintra. Further expansions to the Moors’ Castle were also made by later inhabitants.

By the early 1800s, the Moors’ Castle lay in complete ruin. It was the eye of King Ferdinand II that saw value in the sight and commissioned an expensive restoration. Today, it is a monument of national importance in Portugal.

The Moors’ Castle offers breathtakingly brilliant views of Sintra. The Castle premises have a tourist area which can be used by visitors for a picnic.

Visitors can explore the Castle by themselves. The area is covered with ruins of older structures. Some of the prominent features of the Castle are a huge underground cistern, the chapel and five towers.

At the hillside of the Castle, visitors can take a zip line between platforms built on trees and experience the Sintra forest from above. This includes a guided tour into the forest.

Guided tours of the Castle are available.

  • Too many stairs..feels like top of the world. Worth a visit. The view is amazing. Keep your camera juiced up for lot of photos.

  • Beautiful and stunning views! You can get some absolutely stunning photos of the castle walls and Pena Palace in the background. The day I went wasn’t overly crowded even for the middle of summer.

  • A very atmospheric place. Well restored and maintained, information good, combination of well maintained gardens and the moorish castle, and small cafe is good. Fantastic views from the walls. Get the hop on - hop off bus for 5.5 euro at the town station to visit all the sights, the castle is at the top of a steep hill !

  • This was a spur of the moment excursion from Lisbon and we are so glad we went. The castle offers amazing views and access to areas normally inaccessible in most of the U.S. A couple of stretches of the walk were nerve racking - narrow path and a decent drop off one side - if you've a fear of heights, go the easy way - there are easy ways for both peaks. Stunning views. Take the bus 434 - but you may have to wait if later in the day.

  • Really wonderful walking routes up to the Moorish castle through the forest. Perhaps a little pricey to enter the castle itself at €8 but very interesting indeed to walk along the walls with the views down to the town. Highly recommended to walk up to the castle via Villa Sasseti and then come down the other side of the hill. The maps that are provided details these walking routes very
