Moors Castle - Review
Moors’ Castle or Castelo dos Mouros (as it is locally known) is a medieval castle located on top of a hill. It was constructed in the middle of the 9th century when Portugal and Spain were under Islamic rule. In early 12th century it was seized by Afonso Henriques and his Christian army. Due to its location, it served as an important strategic point of defence for the region. A chapel was constructed as part of the Castle which served as the Parish for the town of Sintra. Further expansions to the Moors’ Castle were also made by later inhabitants.
By the early 1800s, the Moors’ Castle lay in complete ruin. It was the eye of King Ferdinand II that saw value in the sight and commissioned an expensive restoration. Today, it is a monument of national importance in Portugal.
The Moors’ Castle offers breathtakingly brilliant views of Sintra. The Castle premises have a tourist area which can be used by visitors for a picnic.
Visitors can explore the Castle by themselves. The area is covered with ruins of older structures. Some of the prominent features of the Castle are a huge underground cistern, the chapel and five towers.
At the hillside of the Castle, visitors can take a zip line between platforms built on trees and experience the Sintra forest from above. This includes a guided tour into the forest.
Guided tours of the Castle are available.

Moors Castle, Sintra Reviews
Located next to Pena Palace, can buy tickets for both at the same time. Views from the top of amazing. Can see the entire city as well as the countryside. Castle ruins are beautiful as well. There is also a walk from the ruins to the town which is very romantic. But there are a lot of steps. And from a historical perspective there isn’t much. It’s a nice hike, not much more. Also, if you take the walk from the castle to the town it takes 30-45 minutes and it’s easy to get lost
A must if you are visiting Lisbon! We rented a scooted in Lisbon and took the coastal road out to this castle and it was worth the trip.. This dope castle was built by The Moors an invading North Africa people, the castle is viper intricate and fascinating and that’s just the outside and the gardens... overall if you have an afternoon this region and all it’s castles and fort walls are worth a visit!
This place is great for anyone interested in history. It is not accessible to people in wheelchairs and there's lots of walking to do (especially uphill) so make sure you can manage that. Well-worth it though. Stunning views and beautiful setting.
Be prepared to WALK UP A LOT OF STEPS! But it's with it for the beautiful vistas from the walls. Lots of markers & signs to explain various features historic & cultural significance. Did I mention that there's a lot of steps?
Nice Castle to go for a hike. If you are with a stroller be prepared to a lot of steps to climb. A baby carry bag is better than a stroller. The entry of the castle is surrounded by great nature and with nice views. From the castle you have a great view on Sintra and other sightseeing.
