About Moors Castle, Sintra

Moors’ Castle or Castelo dos Mouros (as it is locally known) is a medieval castle located on top of a hill. It was constructed in the middle of the 9th century when Portugal and Spain were under Islamic rule. In early 12th century it was seized by Afonso Henriques and his Christian army. Due to its location, it served as an important strategic point of defence for the region. A chapel was constructed as part of the Castle which served as the Parish for the town of Sintra. Further expansions to the Moors’ Castle were also made by later inhabitants.

By the early 1800s, the Moors’ Castle lay in complete ruin. It was the eye of King Ferdinand II that saw value in the sight and commissioned an expensive restoration. Today, it is a monument of national importance in Portugal.

The Moors’ Castle offers breathtakingly brilliant views of Sintra. The Castle premises have a tourist area which can be used by visitors for a picnic.

Visitors can explore the Castle by themselves. The area is covered with ruins of older structures. Some of the prominent features of the Castle are a huge underground cistern, the chapel and five towers.

At the hillside of the Castle, visitors can take a zip line between platforms built on trees and experience the Sintra forest from above. This includes a guided tour into the forest.

Guided tours of the Castle are available.

  • Even in the rain, toting a one year old up those stairs was worth it. I’d do it again and again. €8 to get myself in, under 5s are Free🎉 It is incredible to see, experience & photograph (although pictures don’t do it justice). Had the weather not been so drizzly, we would have stayed much longer & enjoyed the gift shop, restaurant & Cafe. Friendly people/staff & stunning place.

  • Don’t miss it. Well worth the hike. Rough stones, steep steps, no handrails so proceed with care. Wonderful views and history galore.

  • Very interesting and informative visit. Plenty of walking to do outside the paid area, and exhibits both within and outside. Recommended not only for history fans, but any curious human beings of all ages.

  • Amazing views form the castle. Must visit in Sintra. It requires a lot of climbing to get to the views but climb is also fun. Along the outer wall, you continue to see the beauty as you slowly make you way up the many many towers. The cafeteria was disappointing (was just a tuck shop) and entrance is a bit confusing. It takes about 10 min of walk from ticket purchase area to get to main entrance of castle.

  • Well maintained fort with wonderful view of the Atlantic ocean and breath taking view of city. This fort was built in 10 century and is a great master piece. It must have been a tough job to build such a fort in hostile condition.
