Moors’ Castle or Castelo dos Mouros (as it is locally known) is a medieval castle located on top of a hill. It was constructed in the middle of the 9th century when Portugal and Spain were under Islamic rule. In early 12th century it was seized by Afonso Henriques and his Christian army. Due to its location, it served as an important strategic point of defence for the region. A chapel was constructed as part of the Castle which served as the Parish for the town of Sintra. Further expansions to the Moors’ Castle were also made by later inhabitants.

By the early 1800s, the Moors’ Castle lay in complete ruin. It was the eye of King Ferdinand II that saw value in the sight and commissioned an expensive restoration. Today, it is a monument of national importance in Portugal.

The Moors’ Castle offers breathtakingly brilliant views of Sintra. The Castle premises have a tourist area which can be used by visitors for a picnic.

Visitors can explore the Castle by themselves. The area is covered with ruins of older structures. Some of the prominent features of the Castle are a huge underground cistern, the chapel and five towers.

At the hillside of the Castle, visitors can take a zip line between platforms built on trees and experience the Sintra forest from above. This includes a guided tour into the forest.

Guided tours of the Castle are available.

  • An amazing place. Worth the trip to Portugal on it's own. The 434 bus is a bit chaotic but the ride up the hill is worth it. It's a steep walk up to the highest parts of the walls but the view is stunning.

  • Fantastic historical castle. Well worth the €8 entrance fee to walk around the walls and the views from the top are amazing. Personally think this is better than the palace which had a 2 hour queue. There are plenty of beautiful trails to reach the entrance points so no need to drive

  • Beautiful fortified castle, with many steps to climb. We recommend that if arriving in the morning, start with Pena Palace (skip this stop in the 434), buy a combo ticket for Pena and the castle, and when you are done with Pena, simply walk down 400m back to Castelo dos Mouros). Otherwise, you'll queue quite a line in the palace.

  • A very old place, really looks like the Chinese wall ! The view is stunning. You will feel refreshed thanks to the surrounding nature. Don't forget to wear good shoes and a windbreaker jacket.

  • Very good place to spend time, see some things about castle if you like, be ready for a lot walking, climbing the stairs. Nice place you can take some pictures for yourself. A very big place. Like it.
