About Toy Museum Or Museu Do Brinquedo, Sintra

At the age of 14, Joao Moreira Arbues began collecting and preserving his toys. It started as a hobby and soon flowered into a passion for collecting different types of toys and seeking insight into their history and manufacturing process. Soon enough, every corner of Mr Moreira Arbues’s house was filled with toys.He handed over his collection to the Arbues Moreira Foundation, under which the Toy Museum was established. Today the Toy Museum has an assortment of over 60,000 toys.

Sintra’s Toy Museum has a global collection of toys that ranges from battle troops, dolls, doll houses, models of planes, trains and cars and much more. It was opened to the general public in 1989.

The first floor contains toys from 3rd century BC up to the Industrial Revolution. This section also houses many games, space toys, books and other novelty items.

On the second floor is a display of motor vehicles, airplanes, soldiers and special Portuguese toys. The third floor is modelled into an adorable Doll’s attic

From time to time, the Museum also features temporary exhibitions. Some of the famous, well-documented toys on display include Barbie, Star Wars, Action Man figures etc.

The Toy Museum has fascinating exhibitions that trace the history of toys through the ages.

The superb collection at the Museum is bound to get the adults nostalgic and the children worked up into a frezy.

  • As a news junkie I loved this museum. Quite a random thing to find in Sintra! They have a special exhibition on Women and Media..A struggle against Sexism!! so it's free on Sundays for women, l thought that was a very nice gesture. Another true delight were the two girls at the ticket counter that went out of their way to be super helpful and friendly, just lovely..

  • Interactive, technology-based museum, where you can experience #VR and learn about the history of media, propaganda, personalities dueling in media, war embedeed journalism, women in media and many other topics.

  • Really fun place to visit with the family. Great burst of history facts in fun interactive scenes.

  • Very original and interesting, it tells you the story of the world during the past century

  • Cool imteractive displays
