Located on the opposite hills of Basilique de Valera, this beautiful castle was once ruined in the year 1788 because of fire. You can see the ruins still left on the rocky spire of the hill. In order to reach over there, you need to climb up steep stairs, winding around the hills. The stairs might look scary but the scenic beauty surrounding the place has a healing effect to make you forget about your fear for heights. Once you reach the top, cross the ring wall surrounding the castle and walk on the irregular top of the spire. On the south-western side corner, you will find the 15th century old chapel and on the west side a pentagonal fortified building. The highlighted features of the castle are the frescoes, the slender watch tower, southern wall of the castle and some of the interior portion of the castle that has remained undamaged even in fire.

Great place! Lots to see. There's some steep climbing to get to the top (not hiking, all paths, fine if you are in moderately good shape). The castle is definitely in ruins, but there's a lot of structure left to see. The chapel is amazing looking with some intact frescoes still visible on the walls. Lots of great views to the surrounding countryside. Very peaceful. Take a lunch with you and have an amazing picnic!
Really good afternoon out. Be prepared for a step walk up a nice but rough path. Not s lot up there but wonderful views. There is a nice little cafe at the base you can get a good coffee before going to the second Chateau. Well worth a visit.
If you are at sion, you should go there. It is on small hill. You would have beautiful view when you there
It is a very Long hike and strong winds when you’re about to reach the top. It is sad to see that they have failed to maintain the area and doors to the corner turret is locked. Nevertheless it is a great view.
No less spectacular than Chateau de Chillon, much less crowded, this chateau is way too underrated. the castle has a long history and suffered for a long time from the constant fight between Savoie, the master of the Chillon castle and the archbishop for whom the castles was built as residence. It has a tragical history of being burnt down twice, 1417 and 1788. The basilica Valere across valley is also very spectacular. There plenty places at the top for a picnic.
