At the foothill of the lower hill of Sion, lies this beautiful church which is often referred as an ideal example of perfect combination of secular and sacred power, reflecting the glorious days of the church. The strong stone walls of the fortress guards both the church as well as the chateau. The striking feature of the whole fortress is its raw beauty. Unlike other fortresses that undergo many changes to get the perfect look, this fortress still retains its primitive look. You can make that out from the remaining fragments like the 16th century frescoes, 17th century stalls painted with scenes of the Passion, cabinet painted with medieval scenes of Christianity.

Beside the church, the chateau also houses the Musee d’Histoire (History Museum), Museum of Nature and Art Museum. Visit the museums to take a journey through history.

* The facts given above are based on traveler data on TripHobo and might vary from the actual figures
  • It is a very nice chapel, it cost you 8 chf to enter the museum, Swiss travel pass is free but no flash photography is allowed. Do not touch anything in the museum. The chapel is undergoing construction so expect closures to some areas.

  • Built from 1100, and over centuries its the basilica of powerful Sion dioceses. Again this is a under appreciated site with nice view over Sion

  • Beautiful area

  • The views are amazing. It is a hike to go up so probably not for those with back or leg issues. It is quite high so I chose not to walk up to the castle itself as the walk was quite intimidating but did do the walk to the church. While not the flashiest of churches there is a tranquility and serenity to the place that is felt immediately. It boasts the oldest functional organ and sitting in the pews was calming and gave me a sense of peace.

  • Beautiful Abby and it houses one of the oldest working pipe organs in Europe, dating back to 1430.
