Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes with three beautiful cities that have settled round – Ohrid, Pogradec and Struga. The lake has a maximum depth of 940 feet ad covers 350 square kilometres on area- of this 248 square kilometres belongs to Macedonia while the rest falls in the boundary of Albania.
The lake was formed as a result of geo-tectonic depression in the Pliocene era and usually lakes that are formed in this way sustain for 100,000 years. However, Lake Ohrid is believed to have a history of 2-4 million years- something that makes it one of a kind! The lake is fed by underground springs, a few rivers and the nearby Lake Prespa. Lake Prespa has a higher elevation and has an underground Karst topography that drains water from Prespa to Lake Ohrid. Of all the curious facts that surround the lake, its biodiversity is one of the main highlights. The lake is home to more than 200 endemic aquatic species and marine plants and animals and in 1979, the place was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO after NASA named one of Titan’s lake after this lake. Currently you can find fishes like trout and eels. The bleak or Plashica fish which is a fish with silvery scales is used to make the famous Ohrid pearls- the art of making these pearls is kept a secret and is passed down from generation to generation.
Today, the lake offers a calm oasis in the middle of the bustling town of Ohrid. Come here for a long walk, explore the nearby restaurants and attractions or simply sunbathe on the shore. The lake does offers a few boating trips around but for most locals, a swim here is just as fascinating!
