Spread over an expanse of 6.5 acres, this baby island is beautiful to say the least. Called by many names, this island has many interesting legends that surround it. The island’s history dates back to the Dutch settlers, as they were the ones who discovered this reserve. The Bannerman's Castle is one of the most famous tourist attractions which is nestled on this island. Francis Bannerman VI, a businessman bought this island and built this castle as a residence for his family. Also used as a warehouse for the surplus product that he was buying, the castle has had some trying times. Today it lies in ruins, but the island as well as the many stories that surround it are definitely worth a visit!

Pollepel Island Reviews & Ratings

  • I've read so much about this place and hope to take a tour some day. I wish this place, among other castles and old iconic sites could be rebuilt to their former glory instead of falling due to time and negligence, or in this case, simply taken care of.

  • Definitely make plans to take a tour here. History, scenery, boat ride great day!

  • One of the most interesting ruins on this part of the Hudson. While it never was a historic site, it was a great looking castle built by an industrious man with a vision. It is too bad it was allowed to deteriorate, as it would have made a terrific tourist site had it been able to be developed. I always admire it while cruising by and wish we could visit when it was a stable building.

  • Went on a tour recently given by knowledgeable and devoted guide. Beautiful place, lovely boat ride. I can think of no better way of spending a day. Incredible.

  • The island is small but full of history! The tour guides tell a great story about the island's history. Tip: Don't bring any food or drink here since you're not allowed to walk and eat/drink while on the island.
