Set in the Baroque Esterhazy palace, the Central Museum of Mining presents the most comprehensive mining collection of Hungary. Relics from Hungarian precious metal mining are exhibited in the museum which was famed throughout the Europe for centuries. The museum also demonstrates the technical achievements in the field during the last century and the most interesting exhibit is the life-sized mineshaft from the early 20th century. Visitors can enter this shaft to get a close observation.
Ancient flint-mine reconstructed to its original size, narrow shafts of the medieval mines, the hydraulic buckler, miniature working models of machines and valuable collection of shiny minerals is worth observing.

We went here on a whim when we were in Sopeon. It exceeded my expectations. I learned that around 1200--1500 Hungary, especially Transylvania, was the gold supplier to the world. Perhaps that is why Romania wants to keep even the part which would like to be in Hungary. Minerals--it'a all about $$$.
Nice museum in nice building. Could be a bit bigger though.
Closed now, although it should be open.
