The Jews in Sopron go back as early as 13th century and the community played a prime role in commerce and Finance of the city. This Gothic Synagogue is one of the fine pieces of architecture of Eastern Europe and dates back to 14th century.

Primarily used as a prayer house, it also served as a place for congregations and a centre for education for the community.There was also a hostel, ritual bath located just next to the Synagogue which is open to visitors.

A majestic corridor leading to the main hall, the Ark (AronKodesh) and the hexagonal pulpit are one of the must-see in the synagogue. Richly decorated ornamented stone frames, tympanum with motifs of grapes and leaves are worth observing.

After the eviction of Jews in 16th century, The Synagogue was perished and used as a private residence. It was restored in 20th century.
