Located at Port Isabel, at the base of the bridge heading to South Padre Island, the Dolphin Research and Sea Life Nature Center is a non-profit that is out there with a mission to educate the public about the bottleneck dolphins native to the Gulf of Mexico and South Padre Island in addition to promoting public support for aquatic animals and birds in the area. They offer visitors an opportunity to have an up-close look at various locally indigenous sea creatures, as well as daily educational nature presentations. Various aquariums showcase live fish, octopus along with a host of other exciting creatures. Also, there are children friendly touch tanks showcasing local species like star fish and hermit crabs and many more where one can hand-feed the starifsh.

The dolphins here are not kept in captivity, they are let out wild and free. There are daily boat tours that take you out to meet them. The center has Dolphin whisperers who, along with dogs, call out to the dolphins for visitors to interact with them.

Dolphin Research And Sea Life Nature Center, South Padre Island Reviews - Write a Review

  • What a great experience!! We went on the 10:30am tour on a Saturday - it was worth way more than $10! We saw so many dolphins and even a spotted eagle ray jump out of the water. The tour guides did a great job explaining everything from the shrimp boats to the barges waiting a few days to dock. Thank you to the staff that took our pictures as well. I would recommend bringing some water/snacks as it did get hot, even with the breeze. Would recommend this to everyone!

  • What can I say? It's family friendly, great tour experience, and very organized. The staff are all knowledgeable on the creatures of the sea. They are also very helpful with any questions that the customers may. Dolphins don't always come out, depending on the weather. However, when they do, they are simply mind blowing.

  • We bought our tickets online about 4 weeks before the cruise to ensure we were guaranteed a spot on the boat. When we get there, we were the last to board because we had to run to the convenience store real fast to buy some beverages for the trip because we did not know that coolers were allowed. Anyways, being the last to board, there was no more room on the top of the boat and limited seating space down below. The trip was way overbooked! It was very disappointing - the kids were upset we couldn't go upstairs. As mentioned in another review, all we saw were some fish tails and maybe a head here and there. If you want to see dolphins, go to Sea World! We saw more dolphins from the Pirate Cruise in the middle of that afternoon. The fireworks were pretty but we could have seen them from the shore for free. I know the company and crew have no control over the dolphin sightings but it's not worth the hype.

  • We went on the sunset dolphin tour. It was Great! We saw several dolphins and the crew was awesome. This place is the best value and you will not be sorry you went. Will go again.

  • Fun fun fun! We went in the evening dolphin watch cruise (1 and half hour). The prices were $10 per head. You may feel hot at first but as soon the boat starts moving the nice wind will cool you off! Make sure you go and stand in line at least half and hour early because there will be a lot of people and tight parking. Food and drinks are available for purchase during the ride. We had a really great time and saw lots and lots of dolphins. Definitely a must!!!!
