The town had a population of 5,792 at the 2010 census. Southampton was rated having the best tasting tap water in the country in 2008 by the National Rural Water Association. U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy was involved in a plane crash there in 1964. Lewis Strong Clarke, a Louisiana sugarcane planter and 19th century Republican politician, was born there in 1837.
