The Zake Island Reserve was one amongst the three actual National Estuarine Research Reserve components that was dedicated by the Division of Coastal Management, and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration in the year 1985. Situated in Cape Fear River basin, there’s an intertidal complex that is shaped like a lagoon and is one of the most popular and pivotal habitats for shorebird feeding in the East Coast. Species of birds like the short-billed dowitchers, dunlin, white ibis, black-bellied plovers, black ducks, great blue herons, mallards, pintails and a lot more have been spotted at the Reserve. If you are a wildlife enthusiast or a photographer, a visit to the Zake Island Reserve wouldn’t disappoint you.
