As of 2011 the town had a total population of 41,624, while Sremska Mitrovica administrative area had a population of 79,940 (2011). It is the administrative centre of the Syrmia District of Serbia. Once a capital of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy, the city was referred to as the glorious mother of cities.
