There is possibly no more significant ancient archaeological site in the entire state. Between 1939 and 1971 various groups excavated Neolithic remnants from this site, an ancient Pleistocene lake bed. These include skeletons, pottery, menhirs, dwelling pits, bone and stone tools, and mud-brick houses. There was crude artwork. One of the skulls even had evidence of trepanning surgery! The site is important because it confirmed neolithic settlement in Kashmir, which implies the origins of domestic and agricultural lifestyles in the region. It also shows a clear progression of lifestyles from mud to brick houses.
