Dedicated to Sikhareswara Swamy- an incarnation of Lord Shiva, who appeared here to free his devotees from their sins, the Shikaresvara Temple has become one of the most popular spot in the region. This temple is located on the highest hill in Srisailam and overlooks the Shrisailam temple and the Krishna river- offering not just a tranquil spot to pray for pilgrims but also an escape from the nearby cities and their hustle-bustle.
The temple was built in the late 14th century by the Reddy Kings and consists of a Garbhgriha (inner sanctum that holds the idol), an Antaralay and a Mukhmandapam (a main pavilion with 16 pillars). The architecture of the temple is one of its highlight and you can find traditionally carved stones here that take you shooting back in time!
Other highlights include:
- 150 stone steps that date back to the 14th century
- The main tank called Pushkarini that was used to store water
The allure of the temple lies in the faith that if devotees walk to the temple, Lord Shiva will help them to attain moksha (a break from the cycle of life and death). For others, the place is one of the best lookout points around Srisailam.
