The Srisailam Dam is built over Krishna river nearly 15 kilometres from Shrisailam temple. The dam is one of the largest dams in India and is the 3rd largest hydroelectric project in the country.
The construction of the dam is one of the highlights- built in a gorge in the Nallamala hills with a height of 885 feet and having 12 gateways. The dam took 20 years of construction and was opened in 1981 and since then it is the main source of water for Kurnool, Cuddapah districts and the Rayalaseema region. Today, surrounded by the heavenly Nallamala hills with viewpoints that have become a loved spot for nature lovers, the Srisailam Dam is perfect for a short drive. Monsoon is when the gates are opened and you can see the dam in all its force with water gushing from the gates and the lush greenery intensified with the rain!
Come here for a walk, a drive or to simply find a spot at the viewpoint to see a part of Srisailam that is in complete sync with nature. The backwaters at the Srisailam dam are what fairy tales are made of- lush greenery, cascading mountains, the pristine river that meanders towards the horizon and enough places to sit around at take it all in, away from the city traffic! The dam also offers boating. If you plan on staying here for a long time, pack snacks and drinking water for the trip.
