St Andrews Castle - Review

Dating back to the 12th century during the times of Bishop Roger, the castle was originally a place where the Archbishops of St Andrews lived. During the 15th century, the Castle was also used as a prison.

Toady, the ruins that overlook the North Sea offer a picturesque site of the rocky castle. A walk here amidst the green grounds, has a charm of its own. Do take a walk in the visitor center where you can get familiar with the Castle’s role in Scotland’ history.

St Andrews Castle , St Andrews Reviews

  • Lovely staff, lovely place. The mine is brilliant if a bit terrifying but kids love it. The dungeon hole is also quite scared and again the kids love it! The castle is great to walk around and explore with all is tales and history and has the most amazing views. Will happily take up an hour or so of your time. Right in the centre of the city so easy to do as part of a trip to At Andrews.

  • So glad that we made the trip to this castle! The under ground cave was so cool and creepy! It's a little claustrophobic in a couple spots. The views over the water were beautiful. There is a walk through inside that gives some history. St. Andrews was a fun little town to walk around.

  • Pretty to look at from the outside on a sunny day, but inside there is absolutely nothing there. It’s definitely not worth paying to see this ruin. The cathedral on the other hand is much more interesting and there is much more to see... and it’s free! Parking is easy to find in St. Andrews and it’s all free.

  • Fantastic castle!! A bit small but well worth it. You HAVE to check out the underground countermine and bottle dungeon. Also the only castle that still has the old time loo.

  • Really cool ruins. We liked the fact that it was so open and our family could split up and check things out at our own pace and not lose sight of each other. They also have signs that show locations of where rooms and things used to be. Fun castle especially if you’re in town checking out the Old Course.
