Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson made a lot of unexpected finds in China in the early 20th century. There are three main exhibitions here - China before China (largest collection of Neolithic Chinese artefacts outside of China), the Middle Kingdom (3,500 years of arts and crafts), and the painting room (900 years’ worth of painting). Dedicated permanent galleries to Japan and Korea have also been installed. There is a smaller but hugely interesting exhibition called China’s History of Books, which explores writing in China from Bronze Age to the 10th century.
