Established in 1920, the museums location lives up to the tumultuous history of the city it documents – this Renaissance building had been a slaughterhouse since the late 14thcentury . Three distinct periods of Strasbourg is covered – as a free city in the Germanic Holy Roman Empire (1262-1681), a Royal city (1681-1789), and the current metropolis (19th and 20th centuries) – as well as how each of these ages shaped the city. Post WWII, the curators of the museum developed political, cultural, economic and social themes through which a deeper insight could be had.
The exhibits range from the artistic (paintings, sculptures, scale model of the city) to the mundane (costumes, furniture, glassware, tiles) to the idolized (exhibits on the important people who helped shape Strasbourg).
The museum is an unfortunately underrated building. It’s not promoted heavily, yet every tourist who’s visited has left feeling enriched and deeply appreciative of the city’s history.

Visited here with the Alsace Pass (as it's included free as one of Strasbourg's museums). There is a free audio guide available. Plenty of interesting displays showing history of the city in time line with traductions included in English. There are some activities for children to do to interact, such as attempting to fold an early printed press into a logical order (two adult men found this impossible though!) and trying on helmets.
An intriguing journey thru the history of Strasbourg. The "map" is absolutely amazing. The free audio guide is really good.
Very enjoyable! Lots to see and learn about the city of Strasbourg, it's social hierarchy, history, trades and trends. Well worth the visit!
Great museum required over 2 hours to give it justice. Included audioguide worked reasonably well.
I had been invited to the opening a few years back and consider it as the most modern museum and comprehensive to all tourists and locals ! A remarkable achievement of making this a fascinating museum to visit for all !!! Worth while !! Highly recommended !!!
