Where do I even start? I’ve taken both kids here a few times and although we really enjoyed the overall cleanliness and varieties of toys and books in the library, I don’t think we will be back for the story time. We love story times and we wanted to go to a different library this time. We decided, Sunbury community library it was. We came in early at 9.35am (10 minutes early), story time didn’t start till 9.45am and as I walked in the building, I saw a lady sitting in one of the meeting rooms on the floor rocking herself to the right and left. I kept walking and went ahead to get settled at the kids area but wanted to make sure I knew where to go for the story time since it was our first time. I walked back to the lady sitting on the floor rocking herself to ask if that was the room we would be in for story time. She answered yes it was but then ultimately told me I was too early and she didn’t seem to want any company. She was by herself. As a first timer for the story timejn that particular library, I didn’t feel welcomed right away. I thought she could have maybe invited us to sit down and grab a book from ones she had in a bag on the floor, while waiting for others to arrive, but no, she obviously did not want me nor my daughter be in that room because we were 10 minutes early. So I took my daughter to the kids area and played while we waited till 9.43am to make our way to the story time room. We walked in at 9.44am and it was pretty busy then. No smiles from the same lady, no expressions, no greeting whatsoever. It was just plain cold. At this point, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to sit down but I did anyways. There was no background music playing nor screen but a black felt board sitting next to her. Throughout the entire session, it was boring, and story teller enjoyed sitting on the floor more than getting up and getting the kids engaged. The only time she did was when she sang a song with the stomping rhyme. She played this game where she had all different colors of crayons felt on her blackboard and she told the kids to close their eyes so she could hide a green frog under one of those crayons. My daughter and some other kids volunteered to sit up close by the board. After she hid the frog, she asked the kids where the green frog was. The size of the frog was obviously slightly bigger than the crayon so it was easy for anybody even the kids to guess where he was hiding. My daughter kept saying “under the purple one” but she kept ignoring although she knew it was under the purple crayon. She could have at least acknowledged my daughter although her intention was “to prolong the game” by keep asking the other kids where the frog was. For a 20 minute session, she only read 1 book which she could have done more to get the kids engaged in the story time. At 10.10am, the end of the session, a different lady laid out coloring papers on separate tables with crayons which was nice as a closing activity. Before we left, I tried to make an eye contact with the story teller to thank her and bid farewell, but unfortunately she must have something against me or maybe woke up at the wrong side of the bed or God knew what it was. We had an eye contact and before I even said thank you, she turned her face away. We left and realized we won’t be returning. Thank you but no thank you. Never again.
Very good 10/10 IGN
I like their assortment of books.
A public library in a community the size of Sunbury should have Sunday hours.
One of the nicer libraries
