Historically famous for being a destination of punishment and exile or penalty for crimes in Sydney and Australia, the Fort Denison has also flourished as a site for defence establishments and as a major tourist attraction. It is situated along the Sydney Harbour. It houses a museum and a complex for hosting ceremonial and professional receptions. Tourists are transported to the Fort through regular ferry services at the Circular Quay. The tour within the Fort includes the facility of guides and tour organizational services such as the National Parks and Wildlife Services. Over time, for better ease of maintenance of the Fort sections and to make more accommodations for tourists, only the 200mm small muzzle loader guns were retained and the large firing units were removed and restored in the museum. The Fort also maintains a Harbour Navigation Facility equipped with the most modern tracking and security systems for safety of the ferry services and the tourists.
Visitors can wander around the fort at their leisure on a self-guided tour, or take a guided tour of the island and its museum, including a trip up the iconic Martello Tower. You can even experience the firing of the 1 o’clock cannon.
- The Fort houses the Martello Tower, which housed the soldiers as a hideout and shelter during firing, as well as hosting the firing units- the giant cannons and muzzle loaders.

For the price, the food is average and the service is poor. On a sunny day, the marquee becomes a sweltering greenhouse, especially if seated by the "windows". Drinks were forgotten, others we didn't consume were added to our bill. While still eating, we were asked if we had finished on about five separate occasions, yet were unable to catch the attention of wait staff for the rest of our lunch. Great location in a beautiful harbour, and worth a trip. Lower your expectations and you'll have a good time.
I was looking forward to lunch here. Was a little disappointed that it's a $20 ferry ride return for a 10 minute trip but it's not everyday I get the opportunity to go to such a historic location. I decided to order main and dessert but my partner decided to order oysters before our meal came out. It took at least 25 minutes to come out! This was no cooking required and it was a Thursday afternoon so the restaurant wasn't very busy. A couple was seated after us and managed to get their mains before our 3 oysters. We got no apology from the waiter for the delay but when we reluctantly decided to order dessert and coffee he said the coffee was on the house due to the delay in bringing out the oysters. Why didn't they take the oysters off the bill?...because the coffee was cheaper of course. Main did not come out hot and I was wondering if our mains had been cooked before our oysters came out to our table. The waiter actually asked when he took the oysters away if we were ready for our mains. What kind of question is that?! I did not enjoy my cold main with "rosemary salted" fries. The dessert actually came out the fastest out of all the food we ordered and by the time we finished the ferry had arrived and I was happy to go back to dry land.
The views are simply stunning. Great standpoint for a relaxing lunch. Unfortunately the gnocchi was average and slightly expensive. We also had the pork belly which was surprisingly good (we leave the fat). Wine menu was disappointing. Overall experience was okay. Definitely worth the trip as a once-off.
Best location for new years dinner with firework view from the restaurant
On a visit from Adelaide my brother and sister-in-law took my wife and I there for lunch. I was excited about going and was not disappointed. Considering the unique location we found the price of the food and drinks were not expensive. The food was great and the views fantastic. Having a meal in the middle of the best harbor in the world is a 10/10 for me.
