Church Of San Filippo Apostolo - Review

Chiesa di San Filippo Apostolo is an example of one of the rarest architecture deisgns in Ortigia. The dome of the church is placed centrally unlike other church designs and with Greek elements prominently depicted on its façade, a visit here is an absolute must. The interiors welcome you to a charming white-washed building with a centrally placed wooden altar that grabs your attention as soon as you enter. The exterior architecture with classical Corinthian styled façade is a stunning sight in itself and makes for great photos. Don’t miss out on the gorgeous stuccoes that adorn the three naves of the church and the statue of “Dead Christ” that is carried around the city on Good Friday.

The church was built on the same ground where there once stood a Jewish synagogue. After the church was built, the ‘Miqweh’ of the Synagogue was transformed into a burial crypt that is accessible from the entrance of the church. The church has a troubled history for sure but it soaks in its stories and its rich art- making it a ‘must see’ for tourists.

  • The underground tunnels are amazing and totally under sold!
