Established in 1983, this museum dedicated to the local fine arts is a staple in the tours of nearly all first-timers in Taipei. The first museum in Taiwan built specifically for hosting exhibitions of contemporary and modern art, this museum is also important for promoting local artists.

Built on the former site of the United States Taiwan Defense Command, the architecture of this building is a local rendition of structures constructed during the Metabolist Movement which originated in Japan.
