One of the five historic gates in the city, The North gate or Cheng-en Gate was established by the Qing Dynasty and once provided the primary gateway to Dadaocheng. A bunker-style tower comprising piled interlocked rocks, the gate combines the best of both defensives as well as fireproofing characteristics. Smooth curves of the gate combine with the Taiwanese-style Xieshan single-eave roof to give this gate a royal and majestic look. This state-designated historic site is a gem on history worth exploring when in Taipei.
