This is one of the busiest and most important areas in Taipei and receives a huge amount of footfall on a regular basis. Essentially a central shopping area in the Wanhua District, this was also the first special pedestrian only zone in the city.

A major source for the culture and fashion, Ximending is also a trending center for Japanese culture. There are a number of bars and pubs in the city and is also well known for being a LGBT district. One of the most important consumer districts in the city, it is also the largest pedestrian area.

The reason for the prominent Japanese influence in this area is because this was the major center of operations for the Japanese during the Occupation. Several important buildings are located in this area including the Red House Theater, the Mazu temple, etc.
