About Shinobazu Pond 不忍池, Taito

The Shinobazu Pond (不忍池 Shinobazu no Ike) is a pond within Ueno Park (a spacious public park located in the Ueno section of Taitō, Tokyo, Japan), and a historically prominent Shitamachi feature often appearing in history and works of art. The park occupies the site of the former Kan'ei-ji, a temple closely associated with the Tokugawa shoguns, who had built it to guard Edo Castle against the northeast, a direction believed to be unlucky by traditional geomancy. The temple was destroyed during the Boshin War. The pond, although modified many times and even once drained, is natural.

  • Absolutely amazing view with the water roses flowering. We were here last year in April and never thought that the lake's appearance could change that way! I absolutely recommend walking around the lake and enjoy the atmosphere.

  • Very cool and refreshing to rent a pedalo, provides a serene spot away from a very busy Tokyo. Very nice to feel a breeze when the rest of Tokyo is so hot and humid in July. Reasonable price of 600 yen for half an hour. Recommended.

  • Lovely park and pond area. Very busy. Make sure to visit the bird man and have the sparrows eat from your hand. We took one of the swan boats for a half hour and peddled around the pond. There are a lot of other people but we never had an issue with running into anyone. Staff were friendly and easy going - they told us the time we needed to get back. Foreigners beware: The boats are small so getting in and out is difficult, and if you have long legs the boats may be cramped. It makes it more of an adventure.
