2. Takayama Yatai Kaikan

The Takayama Festival is a spring and autumn festival and is ranked as one of Japan’s most beautiful festivals. Located at the northern end of Takayama's old town, this festival is held in between April 14 and 15 and between October 9 and 10. The Takayama Yatai Kaikan is where you can view four of the eleven floats (Yatai) from the autumn festival. A few of these floats are a few hundred years old and the elaborate decoration that they feature is a great example of Takayama’s legendary craftsmanship.

3. Takayama Shōwa-kan Museum

This museum is especially for people who love all things retro! The Takayama Shōwa-kan Museum has many displays, objects, collections, and memorabilia that are dedicated to the Showa period (1926–1989). Come to this museum and experince the Showa era in depth through its many items/objects/artefacts of Japanese shops, homes, movie theatres, hospitals, and even schools. 4. Kusakabe Folk Museum

This museum is dedicated to the group of people called The Kusakabe who worked as merchants for the shogunate in Takayama. Set inside a traditional merchants’ house that was rebuilt by Jisuke Kawajiri since the original one was destroyed in fire; Kusakabe Folk museum is a prime example of unparalleled craftsmanship of the Hida region. The museum houses household objects & folk art from the Edo period that is open to exploration.

5. Takayama Old Town

Featuring beautifully preserved houses and establishments from the Edo Period, the Takayama Old Town is where the wealthy merchants lived during the city’s golden period. 6. Hida Takayama Museum of Art

Featuring Art glasses, Art Nouveau and Art Deco works from the late 19th to the early 20th century, the Hida Takayama Museum of Art exhibits a great collection of art glasses of historical importance. 7. Hikaru Memorial Hall

Apart from helping people understand the history of the old Hida Province of Japan, the Hikaru Memorial Hall also has exhibition halls that feature fine arts, archaeological research, and history from civilizations across the world. 8. Takayama Jinya

During the Edo period, the city of Takayama was under the direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate - the last feudal Japanese military government. The Takayama Jinya during that period served as a local government office. While this building was still in use till 1969, it in now that the building has been turned into a museum. Today, the visitors can tour the complex and check out its many offices, conference rooms, guest rooms and a residential space.

9. Hida Kokubun-ji Temple

Located close to the Miyagawa Morning Market, the Hida Kokubunji Temple is a beautiful Buddhist temple that is best known for a row of Buddha statues and a 1200-year-old ginkgo tree. The ‘Triple Pagoda’ and Bell Tower Gates are a few other attractions of this place. This temple is also the oldest structure in the city.

10. Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine

Sakurayamahachimangu is a 5th century Shinto shrine in the town of Takayama. This shrine has been dedicated to kami Hachiman. The legend says that this shrine was built to protect the city from monster Ryomen Sukuna – a beast who has 2 heads. Surrounded by beautiful green covers, this shrine looks magnificent during the sunset.

11. Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama

As one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the historic villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama are one of the top things to do near Takayama.
