Antiga Audiència is the cultural centre of Tarragona and one of its tourist attractions is the detailed model of the ancient city of Tarraco.  The city of Tarraco played an important role in establishing and preserving the Roman Empire. It was the oldest Roman settlement and the capital of the Hispania Citerior and the Hispania Tarraconensis. Today, Terragona preserves much of the original structures but due to urbanisation, it does take a bite from the city’s archaeological reserves.  

The Model of Tarraco at the Antiga Audiencia offers you a bird’s eye view of how the ancient city would be during its hay day in the 2nd century. You can see the amphitheatre, the aqueduct, the circus, the port and the pier that extended into the Mediterranean see and promoted trade, the walled fortifications and the provincial forum along with the entire city complex. Take a walk here to see the layout of the city and to truly grasp just how well-organised and architecturally advanced the Romans were.
