The Museum del port has documented and preserved the evolution of the port of Tarragona. The museum is housed in a 20th-century building but it is not restricted to the building and its exhibits. The stretch of 4 kilometers from the museum to the Llevant breakwater has a number of plaques that tell you about the history of the place and its importance to the city. Inside the museum, you can travel through the journey of the port since the Romans arrived in the Catalan area and changed it into the ancient city of Tarraco (now known as Tarragona). The best part about the museum is its collection of ships and miniatures, a lighthouse, a vintage ship engine, gear and suits used for sea exploration, tools like compasses and parts of ships that were dismantled and preserved here. You can also find old documents and information pamphlets around to help you understand just how maritime history affected the city’s history.

The industrial space makes sure the museum can accommodate the ships (with sails on!) and along with its minimal wooden interiors, it does help the items to shine. If you are a sailor at heart, a visit here will be well worth your time. The place also has fun, interactive activities arranged for children.
