Geothermal energy is one of the most powerful sources of energy and with New Zealand having a major Geothermal Field, the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station does play a important part in the power needs of the country. Built in 1958, the first plant station uses wet steam to cerate power. In 2005, a new technology was introduced that uses lower-temperature steam to generate power. The Visitor centre gives you a brief knowledge of how the power station uses Geothermal energy and all the technologies that make it possible to create power.
The metal pipes and the industrial buildings do kind of seem alien when viewed from the nearby lookout but the displays make for a pleasant drive through if you love science.
