Kastro Limenarion is a small ancient town that is actually believed to be the oldest village in Thasos. This particular village is located on a vantage point at a height of 450-500 meters above sea level. The village was named after an ancient Kastro castle that was built in the early 15th century and belonged to the Gatilusi dynasty. Much of the old fortification of this castle is still preserved.

The fascinating place became a sight of importance for Pirates and after the mid 15th century, Greeks came to the place and made it their home. Its charm spreads to the Ottoman empire as well when it was renamed to “Yenihisar”. Currently, the homes of the village are rebuilt and furbished to use as summer homes by the owners.

The Agios Athansios church is one of the oldest churches in Thasos. It dates back to 1804 and was built by using stones from the castle wall. On 18th of January every year the village awakens to honour St. Atanasije. The entire village plays hosts to guests who walk around from house to house singing and drinking. On other days, the village offers a rustic terrain to explore with historic houses and fantastic views of the mountains that undulate far into the horizon- meeting the blue Mediterranean Sea. The houses are the charm of the place and you can find some beautiful traditionally carved doors and windows that add colour to an otherwise monotone village.
